Different ethnic groups in the Katanga region would cast the crosses using a sand casting technique, pouring molten copper into x shaped forms in the sand. Katanga crosses were used as barter currency in the late 19th and 20th century and served as a sign of wealth for various ethnic groups in the Katanga region.
