Katanga Cross

Katanga is a region found in the Democratic Republic of Congo which is rich in copper, where the Katanga Cross derives from. Different ethnic groups in the Katanga region would cast the crosses using a sand casting technique, pouring molten copper into x shaped forms in the sand. Katanga crosses were used as barter currency in the late 19th and 20th century and served as a sign of wealth for various ethnic groups in the Katanga region.
